Tipi Experience in Northern Ontario

Our 18 custom built Tipi sits right @ the Amable Du Fond river’s edge. A beautiful, PRIVATE, lazy river flowing north out of Algonquin park. Backed by fields of running Horses, grazing Buffalo and surrounded by forest, this truly is a unique Northern Canadian wilderness experience. In any season Immerse yourself in a truly authentic Canadian experience. Lots of activities on site and in the surrounding area.

The buffalo is the indigenous totem for gratitude for the abundance of life. It is in this spirit that we invite you to The Buffalo Farm.

The Buffalo Farm is a gorgeous eco-farm situated on 500 of the most beautiful acres imaginable directly on the northern cusp of Algonquin Park near Mattawa, Ontario. The Amable du Fond River winds its way back and forth for two kilometres across the most remote part of the farm. Spaced out along the river are three unique, hand-crafted structures available for rent – The Buffalo Farm Tipi, The Algonquin Yurt and the Buffalo Suite Yurt. The farm is also a sanctuary for buffalo, rescued horses and a cornucopia of wild creatures.

Winter time offers an amazing silence under its pearl-white blanket. Snuggle in with a cup of hot cocoa and stay perfectly warm with the wood-burning stove, insulated wood floor and inside insulated shell. You will be plenty warm at night under flannel sheets and cozy duvets. Take excursions to the local parks, to the picturesque nearby town of Mattawa with its Mount Antoine (Ontario’s second-highest ski hill) or to some of the best ice fishing anywhere.

In any season, take a curated excursion to our animal sanctuary. Get up-close and personal with our rescued horses and young buffalo. Learn about these inspiring animals and their individual stories to overcome the abuse they experienced before coming under our care. Many guests cite this excursion as the most moving part of their visit to The Buffalo Farm. “ The horses were the true stars of our time at The Buffalo Farm, getting to pet them, hear their stories, plus our girls getting to ride on the largest one. Those are memories to last a lifetime.” A donation of $30 per adult per hour is requested for the upkeep of the animals. Please book in advance if possible.

Fall is a very special time with its tapestry of brilliant colour as far as the eye can see. It is a favorite time for nature photography, bird watching, hiking and canoeing. A crisp early-morning canoe on the river is an absolute must as the rising sun gradually dispels the night’s lingering fog.

Food can be heated on the wood-burning stove inside the tipi. But mostly you will enjoy cooking outside over an open fire. You will find cooking grills, cast iron pots, a tea kettle, French press, cutlery and crockery, an antique wash basin and a generous supply of wood for cooking and warmth. But, by all means, please do bring any special cooking utensils you may need.

All in all, The Buffalo Farm Tipi is the ideal escape – perfect for meditating, reflecting, connecting with nature, reading, writing, art and music making, napping, holding ceremony, deepening your relationship with spouse, family or friends.
